My 06 Mustang is out of commission for at least a month. Instead of getting a rental, I think I may buy a used truck. I’ve wanted a cheap pickup for sometime, and the rental price is close to what I would pay for a truck. (below $2000)
this looks promising

What should I have checked out before buying? I only ever bought new.
Thoughts?

Go like 80s old and get a bigger more honest truck

Can you find a Tacoma or Frontier in that price range?

Get a thorough PPI but expect issues. It is old with a bunch of miles. Bushing, brakes, and what not may need to be done. I had one like that with the 4 cylinder, gutless but it did the job. These are pretty simple to work on so you may be able to do stuff that needs to be done yourself.

Don't get me wrong I like little trucks I drive an S10 but as with most things bigger is better

Considering KMarino is driving a Mustang, I doubt he needs a 1/4 ton truck. The Ranger will get better gas mileage and cost less probably.

I don’t necessarily need bigger. I need something to get me to work while my car is not working.
I’m thinking truck to be able to haul dirt, furniture and other household things.

Only problem with that truck is the transmission. Rangers with a manual are actually kinda fun. Also check out tacomas for sure if you want a small reliable pickup. Might be pricey though, but they are quality.

Yeah I was actually confused to see a truck this clean. And I am in NJ where it is not even as bad as up there.

3.0 Rangers are cockroaches, impossible to kill. The only weak spot is the cam position sensor housing; replace if it’s squealing. Not a hard job. If it fails the oil pump stops.
At 155,000, it’s broken in. Still has a lot of miles left in it. You might need brakes, ball joints, etc if you want it to be perfect, but it’ll surely last two months. Buy and enjoy.

The truck sold before I had a chance to look at it.
